Le Labo SANTAL 26 has a warm, woody character that feels quite different from sweeter or more obviously floral candles. I noticed that the fragrance has a soft smoky and leathery quality, while the woody character gives it a comfortable, understated feel.
For me, this is a candle that works well when I want something noticeable without making the room smell overly sweet. The fragrance has enough character to stand on its own, but it does not feel overly complicated.

Scent & Fragrance
Le Labo candles come in a range of sizes to suit different preferences. They offer:
The main impression I get from SANTAL 26 is woody, smoky and slightly leathery. The sandalwood character gives it warmth, while the smoky side adds some depth.
Le Labo describes SANTAL 26 as a scent that is gentle, smoky and leathery. The brand does not present a traditional top/middle/base fragrance pyramid for the candle, so I would avoid assigning specific notes that the brand has not officially listed.
For me, the overall profile is more warm and woody than sweet or floral. It is also fairly easy to live with because the scent doesn’t feel tied to one particular season.
Burn Performance
The Classic SANTAL 26 candle contains 245 g of wax. Le Labo says its candles use a custom blend of waxes and natural-fiber wicks, and recommends trimming the wick after burning.
During my use, I paid attention to the way the wax melted and how the wick behaved rather than judging the candle only by its fragrance.
I would recommend following Le Labo’s care instructions and giving the candle enough time to develop an even melt pool. I would also avoid making claims about tunneling, soot or exact burn duration unless those are things you have personally observed.
Throw / Fragrance Strength
Cold Throw: Before lighting, I find the scent noticeable but relatively understated. The woody and smoky character is there without being particularly aggressive.
Hot Throw: Once burning, the fragrance becomes more apparent and the warm woody character is easier to appreciate. For me, it works better as a steady background fragrance than as a candle intended to dominate a large room.
This is one area where expectations may differ. Some users find SANTAL 26 quite subtle, while others experience a stronger throw, so I would judge it based on the size and ventilation of the room. Customer experiences are mixed on this point.
Design & Packaging
The SANTAL 26 candle has Le Labo’s simple glass-vessel design with its recognizable minimalist label. Le Labo says the candles are packaged in glass vessels inside the brand’s classic kraft box, with a personalized label.
I like the understated appearance because it doesn’t compete with the rest of the room. The simple design also makes it easy to use as part of the décor even when the candle isn’t lit.
The presentation is one of the nicer aspects of the candle, although the price is something I would consider before purchasing.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Warm, woody fragrance with smoky and leathery character
- Not overly sweet or floral
- Easy scent to use throughout the year
- Simple glass vessel that works well with different décor styles
- Recognizable Le Labo minimalist presentation
Cons
- Expensive for a candle
- The fragrance may feel too subtle for people who want a strong room-filling scent
- SANTAL 26’s woody and smoky profile may not appeal to people who prefer fresh, fruity or sweet fragrances
Who Is It Best For?
I would recommend SANTAL 26 to people who enjoy warm woody, smoky and slightly leathery fragrances and prefer a candle that feels understated rather than sweet or heavily perfumed.
For me, it is a better choice for someone who already knows they enjoy this type of fragrance rather than someone looking for a universally pleasing scent.
Conclusion
Overall, I like SANTAL 26 for its understated woody character. The combination of warmth, smoke and leather gives it enough personality without making the fragrance feel complicated.
The biggest consideration for me is the price, followed by the relatively restrained throw. If you prefer subtle woody fragrances, I think SANTAL 26 is worth considering. If you want a very strong candle that quickly fills a large room, I would look at other options.
