Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot has a darker character than many of the fresher Jo Malone fragrances. My first impression is that the bergamot gives the fragrance a bright citrus opening, while the oud and cedarwood add a warmer and deeper side.
For me, the combination works because the bergamot prevents the oud from feeling too heavy. It is a fragrance I would consider when I want something warm and woody but still with some freshness.

Scent & Fragrance
The first thing I notice is the contrast between the crisp bergamot and the darker oud. The citrus note gives the fragrance some brightness, while the woody elements make it feel warmer and more grounded.
Jo Malone describes the fragrance as smoky oud combined with crisp bergamot and warming cedarwood. The fragrance profile is generally built around bergamot at the top, cedarwood in the heart and oud wood at the base.
For me, the overall profile is woody, citrusy, smoky and warm. It is not particularly sweet, and I would choose it over a vanilla or gourmand candle when I want something darker and more atmospheric.
I also like that the bergamot keeps the oud from becoming the only noticeable element.
Burn Performance
The Classic/Home Candle contains 200 g of wax and has an approximate 45-hour burn time according to Jo Malone. The candle is made in the English countryside and comes in the brand’s signature black design.
During my use, I paid attention to how evenly the wax melted, how the wick behaved and whether I noticed tunneling or soot.
Jo Malone recommends allowing the wax to melt and pool to the edge of the vessel to help prevent tunneling. The brand also recommends trimming the wick to no more than 6 mm between burns and limiting each burn to four hours.
I would not describe the candle as completely free from tunneling or soot unless those are things I personally observed throughout testing.
Throw / Fragrance Strength
Cold Throw: Before lighting, I can notice the bergamot and woody character. The citrus gives the fragrance some brightness, while the darker oud character is still present.
Hot Throw: Once burning, the warmer and smokier side becomes more noticeable. For me, the cedarwood and oud give the fragrance more depth while the bergamot keeps it from becoming too heavy.
Jo Malone places Oud & Bergamot in its sensual and warming home fragrance collection, describing it as a fragrance suited to evening settings.
For me, this is a better choice for someone who enjoys noticeable woody fragrances than someone looking for a light, clean or purely citrus candle.
Design & Packaging
The Oud & Bergamot candle comes in Jo Malone’s familiar black glass vessel with the brand’s simple cream-colored label. The design is understated and easy to place in different interiors.
I like the simple appearance because it doesn’t compete with the rest of the décor. It feels more understated than decorative, which suits the darker character of the fragrance.
The candle also comes with a lid, which is useful for extinguishing the flame and keeping the candle protected between uses.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Interesting balance between crisp bergamot and smoky oud
- Cedarwood adds warmth and depth
- Woody fragrance without being overly sweet
- Good option for evening or cozy settings
- Approximately 45-hour stated burn time
- Simple black vessel works well as home décor
Cons
- Oud and smoky notes may not appeal to everyone
- May feel too dark or woody for people who prefer fresh fragrances
- Premium price compared with many everyday scented candles
- The 45-hour burn time is shorter than some similarly sized candles
Who Is It Best For?
I would recommend Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot to people who enjoy woody, smoky and warm fragrances with a fresh citrus element.
For me, it is particularly suitable for someone who likes oud but doesn’t want a candle where the oud completely dominates the fragrance.
It is also a good option if you prefer darker fragrances but still want some freshness from citrus.
Final Verdict
Overall, I like Oud & Bergamot for the way the crisp bergamot balances the darker oud and cedarwood. The fragrance has warmth and depth without becoming overly sweet.
The main drawback for me is that the smoky oud character makes this a more specific fragrance. If you prefer light floral, fruity or clean candles, I would probably choose something else.
But if you enjoy citrus combined with woods and oud, I think Oud & Bergamot is a well-balanced option worth considering.
