VERDEN Herbanum has a fresh, green character that feels quite different from the sweeter and warmer candles in my collection. My first impression is that it smells strongly botanical, with an herbal quality that gives the candle a clean and natural feel.
For me, the appeal is in how straightforwardly it focuses on fresh herbs and green notes. It doesn’t feel like a typical floral or fruity candle, and I would choose it when I want something fresher and more natural in the room.

Scent & Fragrance
The first thing I notice about Herbanum is the herbal character. The fragrance has a green, fresh quality, with rosemary and verbena giving it a distinct botanical feel.
VERDEN describes Herbanum as the “purifying, botanical essence of fresh herbs and wild grasses” and lists verbena and rosemary as its top notes.
For me, the overall profile is green, herbal, fresh and slightly earthy. It isn’t particularly sweet, and I don’t get the type of heavy floral character found in many traditional scented candles.
The herbal notes are the main focus, which makes this a fairly specific fragrance rather than something I would expect everyone to enjoy.
Burn Performance
The current Herbanum candle contains 220 g (7.8 oz) of wax and has a stated burn time of approximately 40 hours. VERDEN says it uses a rapeseed and coconut natural wax blend with a lead-free wick.
During my use, I paid attention to how evenly the wax melted, how the wick behaved and whether I noticed tunneling or excess soot.
VERDEN recommends trimming the wick to 5 mm after each use and keeping the candle away from drafts, which can cause rapid or uneven burning.
One thing worth noting is that VERDEN says some unevenness in the wax colour can occur because of the candle’s high natural fragrance content and is not considered a defect.
I would not claim that the candle burns completely evenly or produces no soot unless those are things I personally observed during testing.
Throw / Fragrance Strength
Cold Throw: Before lighting, I can notice the fresh herbal character. The scent gives a clear impression of green herbs rather than sweetness or heavy perfume.
Hot Throw: Once burning, the herbal character becomes more noticeable and gives the room a fresh, botanical atmosphere.
For me, Herbanum works better if I want a natural-smelling fragrance rather than a candle with a strong sweet or gourmand presence. If you prefer powerful vanilla, fruity or floral scents, the herbal profile may feel too restrained or specific.
Design & Packaging
The Herbanum candle has a simple, understated appearance that fits VERDEN’s botanical approach. The design doesn’t feel overly decorative, which I think works well with the fragrance itself.
I like the fact that the presentation is relatively quiet. It can sit naturally on a shelf, table or bathroom surface without becoming the main decorative feature.
The natural and botanical positioning of the candle also feels consistent between the fragrance and the product presentation.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Fresh, green herbal fragrance
- Distinctive verbena and rosemary character

- Good option for people who enjoy botanical scents
- Rapeseed and coconut natural wax
- Approximately 40-hour stated burn time
Cons
- Herbal profile may not appeal to people who prefer sweet or fruity candles

- May feel too subtle for people looking for a strong, room-filling fragrance
- Shorter stated burn time than many larger candles
Who Is It Best For?
I would recommend VERDEN Herbanum to people who enjoy fresh herbs, green fragrances and botanical scents.
For me, it is particularly suitable for someone who wants a candle that feels fresh and natural rather than sweet, floral or heavily perfumed. I could also see it working well in spaces such as a bathroom, kitchen or room with a simple, natural interior.
Final Verdict
Overall, I like Herbanum for its straightforward herbal character. The combination of fresh green notes, verbena and rosemary gives it a distinctive botanical feel without relying on sweetness.
The main limitation for me is that this is a fairly specific scent. If you prefer vanilla, fruit or traditional floral fragrances, Herbanum may not be the best match. But if you enjoy fresh herbal scents and want something different from the usual candle profiles, I think it is worth considering.
